In 1949 four young African-American men (Samuel Shepherd, Walter Irvin, Charles Greenlee, and Ernest Thomas) were charged with raping a seventeen-year-old white farm girl in Groveland, Florida.

About 13.9% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.9% of those under age 18 and 22.6% of those age 65 or over. The per capita income for the city was $15,132. Males had a median income of $27,292 versus $20,186 for females. The median income for a household in the city was $32,017, and the median income for a family was $37,857. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females, there were 97.5 males. In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.23. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 845 households, out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.70% of the population. The racial makeup of the city was 68.81% White, 22.42% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 6.27% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. There were 921 housing units at an average density of 350.1 per square mile (135.2/km 2). The population density was 897.1 inhabitants per square mile (346.5/km 2).
